There is plenty of untouched nature and a wealth of history to discover on Nantucket Island.

The Robert B. Johnson Memorial Hostel, named after a former HI-USA Executive Director, was built as a lifesaving station in 1873. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic campus has been undergoing renovation and restoration during the winter season to maintain the integrity of the facilities. The work has been supported in part by funds from the Nantucket Community Preservation Committee. The facility is just minutes away from Surfside Beach and only 3-1/2 miles from the ferry docks and Nantucket village.

Don't miss the Whaling Museum to learn about the island's fascinating past. Explore by bicycle, in-line skates, kayak, or on foot. Finish your day off with a seafood dinner or a sunset on the beach.

Among the many events and activities, a favorite is "laning". A term coined in the 1930s, laning means to wander up and down the lanes of Nantucket's Historical District. The cottages, gardens, restored captains' houses and narrow walking lanes just call to be explored.
