Eastham Hostel Can Draw Youth to State
Opinion From the September 3, 2007 version of the Cape Cod
Times
With the potential demise of the youth hostel in Eastham,
it appears to me another long term Cape institution is falling
by the wayside. It would seem after 40 years both the hostel
and the neighborhood have managed a working relationship until
now. Having stayed in youth hostels all over the world, I
can state from experience that they have rules and responsibilities
that you adhere to or you don't stay there.
Beacon Hill is trying to figure out ways to entice college
graduates to stay in the state upon graduation, and on Cape
Cod youth are departing every day. It would be a shame if
the hostel closed and prevented youth from all over the world
from ever experiencing the wonders of the Cape and helping
them possibly decide to live and contribute here one day.
I hope the Eastham zoning board will work with the hostel
to find a middle ground that everyone can be happy with.
