Hundreds Support Eastham Hostel

A petition supporting the Hostelling International Mid-Cape Hostel in Eastham will be presented to selectmen on Tuesday.

After neighbors protested a proposed renovation of the hostel, located at 75 Goody Hallet Drive, a closer investigation of the organization's deeds showed that it didn't have enough land to legally be considered a camp, which is how the town classifies the hostel for zoning purposes.

Two weeks ago, the zoning board of appeals ruled that the hostel would have to close its doors, perhaps permanently, after 40 years of operation.

Kenneth Fishman, who initiated the petition drive that supports allowing the hostel to continue, said he collected more than 400 signatures from residents who said they did not want it shut down.
