Hostelling International and Boston Cares, in collaboration with WGBH, are proud to bring this unique film series to Boston. Each month, Community Cinema screenings offer special sneak previews of films scheduled for upcoming broadcast on the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Independent Lens. Community Cinema screenings also feature panel discussions with leading community-based organizations and special guest speakers, as well as information and resources designed to help people learn about and get involved in today's key social issues.

Banished

From the 1860s to the 1920s, dozens of towns and counties across America violently expelled entire African American communities, forcing thousands of black families to flee their homes. A century later, these towns remain all white. BANISHED tells the story of three of these counties and their black descendants, who return to learn shocking histories.

Iron Ladies of Liberia

An intimate documentary that goes behind-the-scenes with Africa's first freely elected female head of state, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia. The film explores the challenges facing President Sirleaf and the extraordinary women surrounding her as they develop and implement policy to rebuild their ravaged country and prevent a descent back into civil war.

King Corn

Two recent college graduates embark on a mission to see where America's food comes from by growing it. In the rural town of Greene, Iowa, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis plant a single acre of the nation's most powerful crop and then set out to follow it to America's tables. But when they learn what their harvest is destined to become, Ian and Curt realize their experiment has gotten out of hand.

A Dream in Doubt

America's first post-9/11 hate crime murder punctuated a growing wave of violence in retaliation for the terror attacks. Told through the eyes of the victim's brother, A DREAM IN DOUBT travels to Phoenix to tell a personal story of national tragedy, murder, community and the American Dream.

New Year Baby

Born in a Thai refugee camp on Cambodian New Year, filmmaker Socheata Poeuv grew up in the United States never knowing that her family had survived the Khmer Rouge genocide. In NEW YEAR BABY, she embarks on a journey to Cambodia in search of the truth and why her family's history had been buried in secrecy for so long.
