Sally Whitcher Spring 2008 Award Winners:
Margaret O'Connor, a student at Tufts University, class of 2010 will be traveling to Jordan from June 1-28 2008. While in Amman, she will be meeting with government officials, academics, journalists, NGOs and others to research the effects of the 2003 US invasion of Iraq on Jordan's reform process. Other members of the research team include other students from the Tufts Institute for Global Leadership, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and the US Military and Naval Academies. Her goals for the trip are to build friendships and cooperation between US civilian and military students, create relationships with Jordanian students, practice her Arabic language skills, inform more peace-driven US foreign policy, and explore the theme of transparent governance.
Kaki Stamateris, a Boston College junior, will travel to the Center for Buddhist Studies located in Bodhanath, Nepal. Bodhanath is regarded as one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in South Asia because it contains one of the world's largest and holiest reliquary mounds, the great stupa. Her program of study will focus on Buddhist philosophy and literature, Buddhist practice and meditation, and Tibetan language. Kaki plans to engage in volunteer work, focusing specifically on the women and children of both Tibet and Nepal.
